In Toyama Prefecture, famous for its pharmaceutical industry, glass pill bottles were manufactured as a peripheral industry in the Meiji and Taisho periods, and many glass artisans took an active part in this industry. The Toyama Glass Studio is continuing to renew the culture and techniques of this industry to the present day. This time, 9+1 collaborates with Toyama Glass Studio to develop a new genre of glass products based on the many techniques and technologies that have been cultivated by the glass artisans of Toyama.

BRAND / CREATOR

  • 9+1
Artist , Product designer , scientist , tailor

9+1 is a collective of artists, designers and engineers who are pursuing cutting-edge expressions in the creative field. Our aim is to give birth to a new form of crafts, produced in collaboration with traditional craftsmen across the country, co-creating at the intersection of crafts with design, art and technology.
Seeing the appeal and possibilities in traditional craft techniques that are different from our own field of expertise, the collective was formed in 2017. One of our first exhibition was held at Dutch Design Week in 2018 and planned to be part of the Milano Salone in 2020.

VENUE

  • JASMAC AOYAMA
    Event Space

JASMAC AOYAMA was designed by Aldo Rossi, an Italian architect and a winner of the Pritzker Prize which is referred to as “the Nobel of architecture”. Exterior walls use marbles of Bianco Carrara from Italy and Azul Macaubas from Brazil. Yellow side walls and red lattice windows give the building its distinctive look. The authentic Italian architecture also features the entrance with a 12-meter high open ceiling and a dramatic spiral staircase. With its spacious basement floor, the building can be rented out for various events and parties, or a galley/photo studio.
