Built for the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, the Yoyogi National Stadium has become an architectural icon for its distinctive design. By using the latest hanging roof structure at that time, the roof of 1st gymnasium was supported by two large central supporting cables, and the roof of the 2nd gymnasium by a spiral pipe wrapping around the central column. It’s dynamically suspended roof creates the iconic structure of the building, also giving the interior a large opened atmosphere and feeling.
