The National Art Center, Tokyo

area: 六本木/ROPPONGI

information

A museum has to function as a place for people to gather, like a salon. Thus the café, museum shop, restaurant and lobby play an important role for the National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT). The glass atrium facade based on fractal curves was designed to blend with the surrounding trees. On the exterior of the glass façade, glass louvers shut out ultra violet lights and direct sunlight, allowing energy saving. Another feature of the NACT are the 7 large scale exhibition spaces, each with 2000㎡, that make it capable of hosting many exhibitions of various scales at once. The most important feature from a functional point of view is an efficient and comfortable installing and dismantling process, which here has been skillfully rationalized. The fun atrium and the rationalized installation system, together with the various exhibitions shown simultaneously, create the unique characteristics of the NACT.
